Export for AI

Export for AI saves your whole project as one Markdown file that any AI can read. Attach it to a conversation in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or anything else that takes a file, and the AI has the full picture: every node, its notes and properties, and every connection.

Why you'd use it

It's the route that needs no setup at all. There's nothing to install or connect, and it works with AIs that can't reach your computer, such as the web versions. It's a good way to get a second opinion on a structure, or to start a conversation that already knows your project.

If you want an AI that can make changes as well, Filamental AI and MCP do that live (see AI Connections & Prompting).

Exporting

  1. Click Export for AI, on the right of the bottom bar.
  2. Choose where to save it. Filamental suggests your Downloads folder and names the file after your project, ending "for AI".
  3. Use it. A confirmation says how many nodes, connectors and properties went in. Attach the file to your AI chat, or press Copy to clipboard and paste it.

What's in the file

It opens with a short header (the project's name, when it was exported, and how many nodes and connections it has), then a Structure section, written so the AI knows what it's looking at before it reads a single note:

  • Classifications and Connectors: which are in use, and how many of each
  • Most connected: the busiest nodes, and which connectors make up most of their links
  • Load-bearing: the nodes that would split the structure if they went
  • Islands: how many separate groups there are, and the largest of them
  • Unconnected: nodes with no connections at all
  • Thin records: nodes with no notes and no properties

After that come your classifications and connector types, then every node with its classification, properties and notes, and finally every connection, with its type, label and direction.

Tips

  • Open with something like "Here's my Filamental project, I'll follow up with questions." The gap analysis and expand-a-node prompts in AI Connections & Prompting work well on it.
  • The Structure section is worth a read yourself. It makes a quick health check on your own project, since the thin records and unconnected nodes are usually where to work next.
  • On a big project, ask the AI how many nodes it can see before anything else. If the number's short, the chat has cut the file off.
  • If you come back to the same project often, put the file in a Claude Project (or your AI's equivalent) and swap in a fresh one when things have changed.

What it doesn't do

  • It's a snapshot. Change the project and the file is out of date, so export again.
  • It's one way. The AI can read it, but nothing it says comes back into Filamental by itself. To build from a conversation, see AI Connections & Prompting.
  • It leaves out pictures, attached files and the layout. It carries the content and the shape of the structure, not where things sit on the canvas.
