Side-by-Side with Any AI

Open any AI chat beside Filamental, talk your subject through, then ask for a Mermaid diagram and paste it in, and you have a project you can navigate, with no connection, no setup and nothing to install.

Where: any AI chat, plus Space Studio › bottom toolbar › Insert into graph › Insert Mermaid diagram

What it is

The simplest way to work with AI and Filamental. It works with any AI chat tool, including Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and needs nothing but two windows open side by side. Every AI worth using can write Mermaid, the plain-text diagram format, so this is the route that asks least of your AI.

This is the place to start from a completely blank project.

How to use it

1. Talk it through. Open your AI chat next to Filamental and discuss whatever you're working on: a project, a process, a research topic. Just a normal conversation, no special format needed yet.

2. Ask for a diagram. Once you've talked it through, ask the AI something like: "Turn this into a Mermaid flowchart I can import into a knowledge graph tool, using flowchart TD and --> arrows." Most AI tools, Copilot included, produce usable Mermaid code from a prompt like this with no extra setup. For more control, use the prompts in Prompts for Your AI.

3. Import it. In the bottom toolbar, click Insert into graph (+) and choose Insert Mermaid diagram. Paste the code and click Next. Copy and paste the code exactly, since that's the only part that needs to be precise. Then match each shape in the diagram to a classification, or pick Create new for it, and click Create. Don't worry about getting the classifications right at this stage, since you can always change them later from the node itself. Starting from nothing, the Mermaid card in New, Open or Import makes the project and opens the same window.

4. Ask for content. Go back to the AI and ask it to write the substance: "Now write two to four sentences of notes for each node in that diagram, so I know what each one represents."

5. Paste it in. Copy each block of text across into the matching node's notes in the Right Panel, one node at a time.

6. Come back anytime. Whenever you want to pick the conversation back up, days or months later, click Export for AI at the right of the bottom toolbar. It saves your entire project, every node, connector and note, as one file. Attach that to any AI chat and it has full context again, no re-explaining required. See Export for AI.

That's the whole workflow. No MCP, no skills, no admin setup, nothing to install.

Tips

  • Arrows arrive as plain lines. Every connection in the diagram comes in as your first connector type, with its label but no arrowhead. Set types and directions afterwards, see Arrows, Direction and Pull.
  • The whole diagram is one undo step. One undo takes it all out again, though any classifications it created stay.
  • Keep labels short. A label over 200 characters stops the import at that node, so shorten it first.
  • On a busy canvas, the new nodes arrive in a ring around the middle of what's there. Press [1] for Dark Energy to spread everything out.

How this helps you

Use it when you can't, or don't want to, connect anything: a work laptop that won't let you install a connection, an AI that only lives in a browser tab, or a conversation you've already had and want to keep. When you're ready for a live connection instead of copy and paste, see Filamental AI, which gets you there in about the time it takes to paste a key, or Connect an AI App.
