For Investigations

Journalists and specialists

Every case starts with fragments. A name. A domain. A transaction. A photograph with metadata that does not match the story. The work is no longer finding the data, the work is seeing the shape it makes.

Maltego built an industry on this principle. We use it ourselves. But enterprise licensing, proprietary data locks, and the faint whiff of defence contracts are not for everyone. We do not charge seven thousand pounds a year. We do not sell to militaries. We just build the tool.

Filamental offers the same spatial reasoning, the same link analysis, the same ability to pivot from one entity to another and watch the structure emerge. Without the lock-in. Without the price tag. Without the server in Utah.

Your data. Your machine. Your investigation.

What spatial analysis gives an investigator

A spreadsheet of entities is a list. A graph of entities is a landscape. You see the clusters, the outliers, the paths that connect what appeared unrelated.

In Filamental, every entity is a node. Every connection is a relationship you define and annotate. The spatial layout carries meaning—proximity suggests association, distance suggests independence, the shape of the cluster suggests a pattern your eye recognises before your mind can name it.

This is not dashboard analytics. This is cognitive support for the way investigators already think: in networks, in dependencies, in the shape of what lies beneath the surface.

How Filamental fits

Build the case as a world

Start with what you know. A person, a company, an IP address, a phone number. Add nodes as you discover them. Draw connections as relationships become clear. The case grows spatially, not just chronologically. You see what you have, and what is missing, in a single view.

Annotate as you investigate

Every node carries a markdown document. Paste in source material, interview notes, timestamps, URLs. Attach files, images, PDFs. The evidence lives with the entity it supports. No separate folder of "case notes" that drifts out of sync with the map.

Pivot without losing context

Follow a lead from one entity to another. Create a new connection, open a new branch of the graph. The original context stays visible. You do not lose your place in a nested folder tree or a collapsed chat thread. The full history of your investigation is the shape of the graph itself.

The format is the evidence trail

Filamental saves everything as plain Markdown, YAML and associated attachments in segregated folders on your machine. This is not a proprietary database. It is a file system that evolves.

For investigation work, this matters:

  • Every file has a timestamp from the OS, auditable and immutable

  • Version control with Git can give you a complete history of how the case evolved

  • The folder can be copied, backed up, or shared with colleagues using standard tools

  • No vendor can alter, delete, or lose your work because no vendor holds it

It's up to you. The evidence trail belongs to the investigation, not to the software provider.

From OSINT to insight

Filamental does not run transforms or query external databases. We do not get kickbacks from data partnerships, API integrations, or "enrichment" services. That is not what we do.

What we do is give you a sovereign surface where your OSINT results, however you gather them, become a coherent picture.

Paste in a Mermaid diagram from a Recon-ng session. Import a CSV of entities from a custom scraper. Manually add what you found on Companies House, Shodan, or the dark web forums. However the data arrives, it finds its place in the structure.

The insight is not in the data. The insight is in the connections.

Filamental makes those connections visible.

Built for the work, not the department

We do not ask which agency you work for. We do not have a "law enforcement edition" or a "corporate security tier." The same application serves journalists tracking supply chains, auditors tracing fraud, and researchers mapping disinformation networks.

If your work involves following connections through complex data, Filamental is for you.

The rest is your business.
