Filamental and Notion

Notion is the whole workspace. Filamental is the part where you build something and send it.

Notion is a connected workspace of docs, wikis and databases, used by teams of every size. If the part you need is the long document you build, publish as a link and keep improving from your own computer, Filamental does that part, at one price with everything in it.

The document you send

Build it, publish it, push each revision

Publisher Studio is made for the dense document that does the selling: a proposal, a plan or a briefing that runs to dozens of pages, with cover images, headings at every level, columns, pictures and video laid out the way you want them.

Publish it as a link and the person receiving it opens it in any browser, on a phone as readily as on a desktop, with nothing to install, no account and no seat. As the deal moves, add, cut and rearrange on your own computer. Nothing reaches the reader until you push: each version is encrypted on your machine before it goes and lands at the same link, so the next time they open it they’re reading the latest, and a half-finished edit never shows. A hosted link expires on its own after 180 days, so an old proposal never lingers, and the downloaded HTML file keeps for good.

Built to bend

A structure that’s meant to change shape

A database is powerful once everyone knows its fields and follows the process that keeps them tidy. Filamental expects the structure to move. Rename a classification on the day you realise it’s wrong and every node follows, connect two things that didn’t fit the plan, or lift a whole section into another part of the structure. When the shape changes, that’s the work going right, and nobody has to be trained to let it.

Behind the document sits the space it was built from, where every section is a node and every connection is a relationship you name, so the thinking and the thing you send are the same files. Why filing too early hides things is the argument underneath all of it.

One price

One price, everything in it

Notion’s plans are priced per member and unlock features tier by tier: single sign-on arrives with Business, page history lengthens as you climb, the AI agent comes with Business, and a custom domain is paid for by the domain.

Filamental has two plans and the paid one has everything: as many share links as you want, pushing updates to a link you’ve sent, the HTML download, presenting, unlimited nodes and your own backgrounds, for $120 a year, or $12 a month. There’s no tier above it. There’s also no account to sign into, so there’s nothing for single sign-on to manage: a space is a folder, and access follows the permissions on that folder or the drive it sits on.

Your work

Your proposals stay under your control

Every page of a Filamental space is a plain Markdown file in a folder you chose, on your own disk or your own network, readable in any editor with Filamental closed. There’s no telemetry of any kind, and a published link is encrypted on your device before it leaves, so what reaches our server is something we can’t read.

The AI is yours too. Connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or any other MCP client to draft and rework sections in the space directly, or add your own key for any provider, or run a model on your own computer, all of it on the free plan and billed to your own account.

Asked about the two

Five straight answers

Is Filamental a Notion alternative?

For one part of it. Notion is a workspace of docs, wikis and databases for whole teams. Filamental is for building a long, well-laid-out document, publishing it as a link anyone can open, and pushing each revision to that link from your own computer, with the structure behind it in 3D and every page a Markdown file in a folder you own. If that part is what you need, Filamental does it at one price with everything in it.

Can I keep a published Filamental page updated after I’ve sent it?

Yes, and you decide when they see each change. On the paid tier you edit on your own computer and push the new version, encrypted on your device first, to the same link, so anyone who already has the address sees the latest the next time they open it, with no new link to send and no half-finished edits on show. A hosted link expires on its own after 180 days, and the downloaded HTML file never expires.

Does Filamental have single sign-on?

There’s no account to sign into, so there’s nothing for single sign-on to manage. A Filamental space is a folder, and access to it follows the permissions on that folder or the drive it sits on, so revoking someone’s folder access revokes their access to the work. The people you publish to need no account to open a link.

Can I bring Notion pages into Filamental?

Yes. Export the pages from Notion as Markdown and open that folder in Filamental, and the pages come straight in as a space. You can then connect them, lay them out in Publisher Studio with columns and images, and publish the result as a link.

What does Filamental cost compared with Notion?

Filamental has two plans. Personal is free and permanent, with no account and no card, unlimited spaces and everything AI, including all of Publisher Studio and one share link at a time. Professional, at $120 a year or $12 a month, has everything else with no tier above it: as many share links as you want, updating a link already sent, the HTML download and presenting. The people you send to never need a plan, an account or a seat.
