Flow and Breathe

Press [N] for Flow or [M] for Breathe while you're presenting to set your structure moving, and [,] or [.] to change how fast it turns.

What it is

Flow and Breathe are the two motion modes of Present. Flow sends light along each connection in the direction it points, and Breathe lets each group drift gently out and back. Both run only while you're presenting, so the canvas you build on stays still.

How to use it

Both need your nodes drawn as Stars, in Settings › Graph › Nodes › Node style. Flow also needs a curved Connector style (Sweep, Tension or Filament) in Settings › Graph › Connectors. Until then their buttons don't appear. See Cards and Stars.

  • Flow [N]: light travels along each connection the way it points, both ways along a two-way one, and a connection with no direction shimmers where it is. Flow is the same switch as Settings › Graph › Connectors › Flow when presenting, which starts on, so the choice holds in both places. See Arrows, Direction and Pull.
  • Breathe [M]: each classification's group drifts out from the middle and back, with a slight bob, at its own rhythm. Sub-types move with their classification. Groups pull apart and come back together at different moments, so the connections between them stretch and relax, which Tension and Filament show best. Breathe eases in and out over about two seconds, starts off the first time, and remembers how you last left it.
  • Slower [,] and Faster [.]: five speeds, held still, then one turn every 160, 80, 40 or 20 seconds. The first presentation opens at one turn every 40 seconds, and after that at whatever speed you last chose. A readout shows the speed for a moment each time it changes.

The buttons run left to right in the same order as their keys, [N], [M], [,] and [.], which sit together on the bottom row of the keyboard.

Tips

  • The slowest step holds it still, which is the one you want when somebody asks about a node and you'd rather it stayed put while you answer.
  • Breathe never moves your nodes. Their positions stay where they were and nothing is saved, so the layout you leave is the layout you come back to. In 2D every group stays in the plane.
  • In a shared link or an HTML download, Flow opens the way you had it set, and both buttons appear when the document uses Stars with curved connectors. See What Recipients See.

How this helps you

  • Use Flow when the direction of your connections is the point: supply lines, approvals, who reports to whom.
  • Use Breathe on a stand or a screen that runs with nobody touching it, so the groups read as groups from across a room.
  • Use the slower speeds for a room that's reading the labels, and the faster ones for a screen people walk past.
