What it is
Classifications are your project's vocabulary for nodes: Clients, Systems, Risks, Steps, whatever your work is made of. Each one has a colour, and every node in it glows with that colour, its corona, so a structure reads by kind at a glance without reading a single label. You make them and change them inside Filamental, in a form, with no files to edit.
How to use it
Create one
Click + (Add note type) on the Node Pages heading.
In New Node Type, type a Display Name, such as "Software Tool". The key Filamental stores is shown beneath it.
Pick a Colour and click Create type.
The classification appears as a group in Node Pages. Its quill (Add note to …) adds a node straight into it.
Put nodes in it
Drag a node's row in the left panel onto the classification's row. Drag a selected row and the whole selection moves.
Right-click a row in the left panel and choose Move to ▸.
Select the node and pick the classification from Type at the top of the Right Panel.
Right-click the node on the canvas and use Change type ▸.
Select nodes and click Change node type on the bottom toolbar, which lists sub-types as well.
Change, order or remove one
Right-click a classification's row:
Rename edits the name in place.
Edit opens Edit Node Type for the name and colour. Click Save changes.
Add sub-type makes a classification within this one. A sub-type shares its parent's colour, and right-click it to Delete sub-type, which moves its nodes up to the parent.
Delete asks what to do with the nodes in it: Move all notes to Recycle Bin, or Keep notes as Unclassified.
Drag a classification by its colour bar to change the order. That order is the one the Layers arrangement stacks in. See Dark Energy and Layers. Click the chevron beside a classification to fold it up, and its count shows instead.
Light it up
Click a classification's name and its nodes stay bright on the canvas while everything else dims. Click again to turn it off. See Highlighting.
Tips
Renaming a classification changes only the name you see. The stored key stays the same, so no node loses its classification.
Deleting a classification can be undone, whichever option you pick. Renaming and recolouring can't, so change them back by hand. See Undo and Redo.
Properties belong to the whole project, not to a classification. See Properties.
The order of the classifications is remembered on this computer.
Templates add a ready-made set of classifications for a kind of work. See Templates.
How this helps you
Use a few distinct classifications, each with its own colour, and the graph reads from across a room.
Use sub-types when one kind of thing needs splitting, Clients into Current and Past say, without a new colour.
Rename freely as you learn what your project is really about. The vocabulary can change after the structure exists.
