Undo and Redo

Undo is Ctrl+Z and redo is Ctrl+Y (or Ctrl+Shift+Z). The same two arrows sit beside your project's name in the Top Bar. Hover over either one to see the step it will undo or redo.

What you can undo

Most of the changes you make to a project:

  • creating, renaming, reclassifying and deleting nodes, one at a time or a whole selection at once
  • creating and deleting connections, and changing their type, label, direction or strength
  • properties
  • the layout buttons, such as Dark Energy and Layers
  • in the left panel: moving nodes to another classification, dropping one page onto another to connect them, and deleting a sub-classification
  • in the Publisher: page titles, the order of pages, covers, and adding pages, web pages and files
  • anything you insert from the + menu: files, links, bridges and Mermaid diagrams
  • changing where a bridge points
  • deleting a classification or a connector type, whichever option you pick

A deleted node comes back as it was. Its notes, the folder it sat in, its place on the canvas, its pictures and cover, its connections, and the links to it written in other notes. If you've edited one of those other notes since, your edit is kept, and only the link in that note stays as plain text.

In a pop-out window

A node popped out into its own window keeps its own history. Ctrl+Z in that window undoes what you did in it, and only that. Undo in the main window doesn't reach into it.

Changes made by the built-in assistant

When a reply from the built-in assistant changes your project, an Undo these changes button appears under that reply. It reverses everything the reply did, newest first. If something it touched has been changed again since, that part may not go back, and the button tells you how many didn't. See AI Connections & Prompting.

What you can't undo

  • Typing in a note. While you're in the text, Ctrl+Z undoes your typing instead.
  • Moving a node by hand on the canvas.
  • Imports, meaning opening a folder, importing from Obsidian, exploring a folder or document with AI, and Classify notes by folder. They change a lot at once, so they aren't steps on the list. Classify notes by folder takes a backup first, and so does an exploration added to a project you already have. That exploration also sits in a folder of its own, so deleting the folder removes it.
  • Renaming or recolouring a classification or a connector type, or changing its settings. Change it back by hand.
  • Changes made by an AI connected through MCP, such as Claude Desktop. Those happen outside Filamental, so ask the AI to put them back.

How far back it goes

Up to 50 steps. The history starts afresh whenever you open a project, switch to another one or close Filamental.

If a step can't be undone any more, say because what it changed has been deleted since, Filamental skips it and tells you so beside the undo arrows. The steps before it still work.

Where deleted things go

Anything you delete is held inside the project until you close it or open another, which is what lets undo put it back. After that, a deleted note's file goes to your Recycle Bin (Trash on a Mac). Its cover and any pictures pasted into it don't go with it: they're removed for good. Copy them somewhere first if you want to keep them.
