Sharing a Document

Click Share at the top right of Publisher Studio, choose Shared link, and Publish link to get an address anyone can open in a browser. Where: Publisher Studio › top bar › Share · Plan: One live shared link is free, while more links and pushing changes to a link are in Pro

What it is

The Share window asks one question first, shared link or HTML file, and then shows only the options for the one you pick. A shared link publishes an encrypted copy of your whole document, every page, cover and attached file, and gives you back a link that opens like a normal webpage. Nobody needs Filamental, or an account, to read it. (The HTML file is on its own page: HTML Download.)

Sharing is zero-knowledge. Your document is encrypted on your computer before it leaves it, and our server only ever holds the encrypted copy. In the window's own words: "We can't see what you share."

How to use it

  1. In the Publisher, click Share at the top right.
  2. Leave Shared link selected.
  3. To lock it, switch on Password protect and type a password.
  4. Click Publish link. The window shows the address, then closes.

There are two kinds of link:

  • Open link: a random encryption key is made and tucked into the link itself, after a #. Browsers never send that part of a link to any server, so only someone holding the full link can unlock it.
  • Password-protected link: the key comes from the password you set instead, so nothing sensitive travels in the address at all. Give the password to your recipient separately, ideally by a different channel.

Links expire 180 days after you publish them.

After you publish

A published link isn't live: you choose when your readers see a change. Once a link is out, the Share button becomes a small Link badge (Locked for a password-protected one). Click it for:

  • Push latest changes: re-encrypts your latest content and sends it to the same address, so anyone who already has the link sees the new version next time they open it. Nothing new to send round. This is part of Pro. On the free plan the menu says what to do instead: remove the link and share again, which gives a new address.
  • Copy link: copies the address again.
  • Remove link: asks first, then takes it down straight away. Anyone with the address then gets a "not found" page.

Managing your links

Projects › Sharing lists every link published from this computer, newest first, with Copy and Revoke on each (see Projects Window). It frees your one free link without opening the project it came from.

Tips

  • The free plan holds one live link at a time. If yours is in use, the window says so and offers See Pro; remove the old link to publish a new one.
  • A link published during the trial keeps working for its full 180 days afterwards, and you can still remove it.
  • Each project carries one link at a time. Pro lets several projects each have their own.
  • To add or drop a password, remove the link and publish again, which gives a new address.
  • Pushing changes to a password-protected link after a restart asks for its password again, so existing readers keep using the same one.
  • The Link badge sits where the Share button was, so the HTML download isn't offered while a link is live for the project.
  • A picture of the graph itself is a different feature: see Images and Previews.

How this helps you

Use it to send a proposal to a client who'll open it on their phone, or to publish a page you'll keep correcting while the address stays the same.
