Bridges

Choose Insert into graph › Create folder bridge on the bottom toolbar to add a bridge, a node that takes you into another project when you double-click it.

Where: Space Studio › Bottom toolbar › Insert into graph › Create folder bridge · Left panel › Bridges · Keys: Double-click the bridge to travel

What it is

A bridge joins two projects. It sits on your graph like any other node, with a wormhole badge, and double-clicking it opens the project at the other end. Each project keeps its own folder, its own layout and its own physics, so a large body of work can be split into focused parts without losing the way between them.

Bridges don't count towards the free plan's 20 nodes per project, and you can have as many as you like on any plan.

How to use it

Make one

  1. Open the project you want to leave from. The project you're bridging to needs opening in Filamental once first, so that it's a project in its own right.
  2. Click Insert into graph (+) on the bottom toolbar and choose Create folder bridge.
  3. In Create a folder bridge, click Choose folder and pick the other project's folder. It's Labelled with that project's name.
  4. Click Create bridge.

Connect a bridge and label its connectors like any other node, so the join between two bodies of work is itself something you can describe.

Travel through it

Double-click the bridge on the canvas, or select it and click Open destination folder → in the right panel.

Look after it

Select a bridge and the Right Panel shows Folder Bridge, whether it's Intact or Broken, and its Destination. Bridges are also listed under Bridges at the bottom of Node Pages in the Left Panel.

  • Change destination points it at another folder.
  • If the destination has been moved, renamed or deleted, the bridge shows as broken, on the canvas and in the list, and Retarget bridge lets you point it at the folder's new home.
  • Remove bridge takes the bridge out, as a step you can undo. On the bridge's right-click menu in the left panel it asks first. Either way the project it leads to stays exactly as it is.

Bridges are protected, so they can't be reclassified as another kind of node.

Bridges as the way past the free node cap

On the free plan a project holds 20 nodes, and bridges don't count. When a project's full, Filamental says This project is full and offers Insert bridge node beside Go Pro. Start a second project, bridge into it, and keep going. Nothing gets deleted and nothing you've built is lost, it just becomes two projects instead of one crowded one. See Plans: Free and Pro.

Tips

  • A bridge can't point at the project it's in.
  • If you open a folder that sits inside another project, the outer project then shows it as a single bridge. See Open a Folder as a Project.
  • A project built with AI from a folder of documents is reached the same way, through a bridge. See Explore a Folder or Document with AI.
  • Inserting a bridge and changing where it points can both be undone. See Undo and Redo.

How this helps you

  • Use bridges between client projects, team areas or areas of your life, so each stays clean and the next is a double-click away.
  • Use one when part of the work needs handing over: the other project is its own folder, so you can share it without sharing the rest.
