Insert Menu

Click Insert into graph (+) on the bottom toolbar to bring things into your project: a Mermaid diagram, a link, a file, an exploration with AI, a folder bridge.

Where: Space Studio › Bottom toolbar › Insert into graph (+)

What it is

The Insert menu adds the things that aren't a plain node you type. Each item lands in the project you have open, most of them as nodes of their own. Going the other way, Export for AI on the same toolbar saves your project as a file an AI can read. See Export for AI.

How to use it

Mermaid diagrams

Insert Mermaid diagram builds a whole structure in one step from Mermaid code, the text format many AI chats and documentation tools use for flowcharts.

  1. New from Mermaid Code: paste the diagram. Filamental counts the nodes and connectors it finds as you paste. Click Next.
  2. Map Shapes to Node Types: for each shape in the diagram, pick one of your classifications, or Create new to make one named after the shape. Click Create.
  3. Done reports how many nodes, connectors and classifications were made. Press Dark Energy [1] to arrange them.

To have an AI write the Mermaid for you, see Side-by-Side with Any AI. To start a whole new project from a diagram, see New, Open or Import.

Link and file nodes

  • Insert link as node: paste a URL, give it a short Node title and click Add to graph. Addresses starting https://, http:// or mailto: are accepted, and www. gets https:// added for you. The address is kept in the node's file.
  • Insert file as node: pick any file and choose Copy to folder or Move to folder. The file becomes a node of its own, and double-clicking that node opens it in its usual program. Markdown files are Filamental's own note format, so they can't be inserted this way: open the folder they're in as a project instead.

To attach a file to a node you already have, rather than make it a node, use Attachments in the Right Panel.

Explorations with AI

Insert a Document Exploration and Insert a Folder Exploration have the AI you've connected read one document, or a whole folder, and add what it finds to this project as a separate structure. See Explore a Folder or Document with AI.

Classify notes by folder

Classify notes by folder gives every note that has no classification the classification of the top-level folder it sits in, named as the folder is. Notes that already have one, and notes outside any folder, are left alone. Filamental takes a backup first and reopens the project when it's done. The same action is in Settings › General. See Open a Folder as a Project.

Folder bridge

Create folder bridge adds a node that takes you into another project with a double-click. Bridges don't count towards the free plan's node limit. See Bridges.

Tips

  • Everything here except the explorations and Classify notes by folder is a step you can undo. Those two change a lot at once, so they take a backup instead. See Undo and Redo.
  • The explorations and Classify notes by folder are greyed in a read-only project.
  • New nodes from links, files and diagrams start unclassified, except where a diagram's shapes were mapped. Sort them in the Left Panel.
  • Typing [[https://…]] in a note makes a link node too. See Notes Editor.
  • On the free plan, a full project offers Insert bridge node or Go Pro. See Plans: Free and Pro.

How this helps you

  • Use a Mermaid diagram when an AI has already sketched a structure in conversation: paste it and keep building from there.
  • Use file nodes for the documents a structure is about, so they open from the graph.
  • Use Classify notes by folder after opening a folder you'd already organised into sub-folders.
