Settings

Click the three lines at the right of the top bar to open Settings, one panel with nine categories down its left side.

Where: Top bar › Settings (the three lines) · Keys: [Esc] closes it

What it is

Settings is a single panel that doesn't dim the canvas, so you can drag it aside by its header and watch a change land on the graph. Close it with the ×, [Esc] or a click outside it. Forces aren't here: they live in the bottom bar, where you watch them work (see Forces).

How to use it

Pick a category on the left. Here's every one, in order.

General

  • Language › App language chooses the language of the interface. See Languages.
  • Editing › Title case as you type starts each word of a node's title with a capital letter, and leaves words you type in capitals as they are.
  • Editing › Connect pages when you nest them links two pages with a universal connector when you drag one onto another in the sidebar.
  • Getting started › Welcome tour › Replay tour runs the tour again. See The Welcome Tour.
  • Advanced › Audit log keeps a daily record of every change in .filamental/audit, inside the project folder.
  • Advanced › Performance mode is the last resort for a machine that's struggling. Filamental switches it on by itself when the graph stays close to frozen for most of a minute: physics pauses and nodes are drawn in a simpler way. A banner says so at the top of the canvas, and clicking it brings back full detail. If you meet it often, your project may be ready to split in two (see Bridges).

Appearance

The interface themes. See Themes.

Fonts

  • Interface font is used in menus, panels and toolbars.
  • Graph font is used on cards and connection labels in the graph. Same as interface follows the interface font.

Both offer the same ten: IBM Plex, Inter, Poppins, DM Sans, Nunito, Dosis, Gruppo, Grotesk, Syne and Cardo. Hover over one for a word on its character. Publisher pages have fonts of their own, set in Page Style.

Graph

How nodes and connections are drawn. See Graph Settings.

Background

The image, video or gradient behind the graph. See Backgrounds.

Controls

  • Fly mode › Invert horizontal swaps the sideways fly keys ([A] [D], [←] [→]), and Invert vertical swaps up and down ([Q] [E], [↑] [↓]).
  • Shortcuts lists every key and mouse action, and Pop out gives the list its own window. See Keyboard Shortcuts.

AI

Connect an AI app connects Claude Desktop in one click, Other AI apps shows the setup for the rest, and Files for other AIs downloads the Project Assistant and the Format Reference. See Connect an AI App.

Where your settings are kept

Saved in the project folder, so they travel with it to another computer: Connect pages when you nest them, Audit log, Graph font, and on the Graph page Title width, Size nodes by connections, Maximum cards shown, Highlight connections on select and Label width.

Remembered for each project on this computer: the theme, Interface font, Title case as you type, Performance mode, the fly-mode settings, the background, and Node style with the Stars settings. A project you open for the first time starts from our defaults. App language applies to every project.

Tips

  • A dot on the Settings button means an update is ready. Click the dot to go straight to About.

How this helps you

Use it when a setting is in your way, when you're getting a project ready to show (fonts, background, node style), or when you need your licence key or version number.
